As on the day that gave you to the world,

to greet the planets, in conformity with3 the sun’s position,

You developed straightway, and continued without cease,

Following the law by which you had begun.

You must be thus, you cannot escape yourself,

As Sibyls and Prophets had already said,4

And no time, no power can fragment

A Form, stamped with a seal, that develops as it lives.

Yet the strict limit is obligingly5 bypassed

By a changing6 being who changes with and around us.

You do not remain alone, but form yourself in society.

And you probably act as others do;

In the course of life, this falls now in one direction, now in the opposite one;7

It is a trinket, and we dawdle our way through it.

The circle of years has already gone round in silence,

The lamp awaits the flame to ignite it.
